Why Doesn’t the Holiday Season Include Jews?

By Andrew Bock

Yesterday I was watching 22 guys tackle the crap out of each other on the picture tube. As television ratings dictate, chances are a couple of other readers were watching the football games as well.  You may not have been covered head-to-toe in mayonnaise like I was, but we can go into that in another article.

Anyway, one thing that I noticed after a while were only certain demographics were being targeted in holiday ads.  Last year it seemed that there were a lot of non-denominational holiday season ads.  So far I’ve noticed ads with either a Tree, Santa Claus, or using the word Christmas.

So, I started thinking in my own sarcastic way, why is it that there aren’t any TV ads targeted at Jews?  Do we not buy diamond earrings?  Did I miss something and am I not supposed to watch TV on Chanukah hence have no need to be targeted for a flat screen from Best Buy?

It kind of irked me because there was a Kay Jewelers commercial and it kept saying “Holidays”, but only had Christmas paraphernalia in the ad.  Just say “Christmas” if that’s all you’re going to promote.  I really don’t have any kind of issue with that, but if you say “Holidays” I want to see some menorahs.  I’d also like to see a family around a Kinara, but we all know no major company will go that route either.

I do have a decent theory behind why all the Christmas and not Holiday advertising has hit the airwaves already (And by decent, I mean it doesn’t involve sex toys and chocolate sauce).  Since stores know the economy is about as sturdy as my Bubbie’s hip, Joe Co. needs to appeal to the masses and lure people in.  The easy route is to cross Chanukah off the list and really go after the non-chosen ones. So on that level it makes sense from a “I’m a big stupid head corporation” perspective.

Anyway a little diversity would be nice out there.  It doesn’t have to be ads for extremely handsome, left-handed Jews, such as myself, but you know, just show a Jewish family in one quick clip with a menorah in the background opening up a big Best Buy box or something; something that doesn’t alienate me from me from the majority of the consumers out there so as not to keep up the notion that this time of years isn’t for us to celebrate as well.

To update this post. Best Buy did have a Chanukah commercial, so they are okay now.
